NEW ARTIST ALERT - BERTOLF LENTINK:

I wanted to recommend the singer Bertolf from the Netherlands who has just released his new album "For Life". I haven't been able to find out much information in English on him, but he appears to be currently touring the disc and tonight (Jan. 14/09) opens for Brit James Morrison at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. I found this blurb on Last Fm site "Bertolf Lentink, singer-songwriter of The Junes. I’m going to play in the band of Ilse de Lange, for the summer festivals and more very cool gigs! "

The first single from "For Life" (buy the cd here) is "Another Life" which is a nice pop/rock song, but I really like the Keanesque track "All In The Letter" (which is up here for download for one week). Check out Bertolf and see what you think, the video for "Another Day" is available below..

Thanks for blogging about Bertolf! This guy is impressing me too. He is an incredibly gifted musician.

My understanding is that, before embarking on a solo career, Bertolf played in the band of country/pop/rock star Ilse DeLange in 2007 and 2008. This followed some years with The Junes (http://www.myspace.com/thejunes), now disbanded. His contributions can be heard on Ilse's 2007 LIVE IN AMSTERDAM CD. That's where I came across him singing impressive leads on a cover-version of America's "Sister Golden Hair".

Bertolf's father taught him to play music at an early age and he wrote his first songs at age of 14, not long after developing a lasting affinity with the Beatles, particularly Paul McCartney's work. But he also grew up with an exposure to American roots music. He has said that he grew up in between the banjos and mandolins, and that the colours and sounds of roots-instruments nested themselves in his genes at a young age.

Bertolf is a formally-schooled musician and also has been involved in a number of musical side-projects in the area of Zwolle, NL. These include working in cover bands of a wide variety of music: Soul Cages (http://www.myspace.com/soulcagesnl), formed to perform the music of The Police) and Her Majesty (http://www.hermajesty.nl), formed for the sole purpose of performing the Beatles' ABBEY ROAD album, start-to-finish in a live concert. He even contributed his talents to a band that performs "classic western swing" called Panhandle Swing.

Some very impressive and enlightening early work that he recorded with friends can be found here: http://www.heisterkamp.biz/thewe.html

His debut solo album FOR LIFE is excellent! Bertolf worked with Guido Aalbers to record it at the ICP Studios in Brussels last year. He wrote or co-wrote all the songs and he is credited on the album with lead and backing vocals; guitars, weissenborn guitar, lapsteel, mandolin, bass, and keyboards!

Get it if you can! This guy is for real!
